The University of Illinois Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory oversees the veterinary testing and diagnostic services for infectious agents, toxins, and other causes of disease in live and dead animals. Their clients include vet practitioners, animal owners, scientists, public health officials, law enforcement, and wildlife management. Along with a significant role in training veterinary students, the laboratory collaborates on research with the University of Illinois Urbana and Chicago campuses. The laboratory is fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians.

As well as equine specialists, the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory faculty and staff encompasses a wide range of veterinary disciplines including pathologists, clinical pathologists, histo-technologists, microbiologists, virologists, immunologists, parasitologists, and serologists. They also have a satellite clinical pathology laboratory for veterinarians in Buffalo Grove, Ill.

This well-rounded approach to diagnostic veterinary medicine includes both AGID and ELISA Coggins testing with an option for GlobalVetLink reporting. You can find a full list of equine and animal testing here. If you do not use this GlobalVetLink, you will also need to submit APHIS Form VS 10-11, as well as the lab-specific submission form for Microbiology, Parasitology, Immunology, and Virology.

The laboratory accepts personal delivery by the owner or veterinarian, as well as specimens submitted by bus, UPS, U.S. Mail, or by other delivery service. The serum specimen should be in a clearly labeled vacuum-sealed tube and packaged with ice packs. Avoid shipping packages with fresh tissues over the holidays and weekends. They also suggest that samples be addressed to the Laboratory rather than to an individual to prevent unnecessary delays in processing samples when the addressee is away.

Coggins tests are processed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday with results generally available in 48 hours.
