The MDA Salisbury Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory is one of two sister labs run by the Maryland Department of Agriculture. These labs offer both AGID and ELISA testing, both routine and STAT turnaround times. They serve veterinarians, researchers, health officials, and animal owners around the country, while offering very reasonable prices for in-state Coggins testing. View their entire list of tests and fees. (Other specialized tests are also available through partnerships with third-party labs.)

Coggins testing for equine infectious anemia must be submitted with the appropriate federal form. You can also use GlobalVetLink for electronic submission of certain federal Coggins testing information for a nominal fee. Whether an intrastate or interstate form, a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) must also be submitted from an accredited veterinarian. In addition to Coggins and other equine tests, the MDA Salisbury AHDL provides toxicology, parasitology, pathology, hematology, and other diagnostic services.

All testing performed at the laboratory is subject to state and federal regulatory shipping guidelines and reporting requirements. The shipping regulations include a three-component packaging strategy: 1) You need a vacuum-sealed tube; silicone-coated tubes are recommended for AGID Coggins testing, 2) The tube should then be surrounded by absorbent material and sealed in a secondary plastic bag, and 3) The whole package needs to be in a strong box or container that can withstand a 4-ft drop. Finally, The box itself should include the label: “Animal Clinical (Diagnostic) Specimen”.

While both MDA labs can run Coggins tests, the Salisbury AHDL also specializes in avian influenza and poultry testing. The lab is open Monday through Friday. If mailing samples, please ensure delivery by Friday. Samples delivered on Saturday may be degraded and become unsuitable for testing. For the same reason, a serum sample rather than whole blood is strongly recommended when mailing submission samples.
