A collaborative effort between Utah State University (USU) and the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF), the goal of the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UVDL) is to safeguard animal health, the agricultural economy, and the public health against zoonotic diseases as well as other harmful animal diseases. Their primary function is to provide timely, thorough, and low-cast veterinary lab tests and other veterinary diagnostic services including pathology, bacteriology, virology, serology, toxicology and molecular-based assays.
While the main laboratory is naturally located on the USU campus in Logan, they also maintain a central Utah branch laboratory strategically located in Spanish Fork to serve Utah County as well as central and southern Utah. Together, these 2 laboratories comprise the Utah contingent of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN), as well as the bulk of large animal regulatory disease testing including Coggins tests for equine infectious anemia.
Part of their Serology section, the UVDL can run both AGID and ELISA tests with 2 ml serum samples. The cost per test can range from $8-$12 depending on which test you request, how many samples you’re submitting, and whether you opt for digital results reporting through GlobalVetLink. Typically, test results are available the day after the sample reach the lab. You can also get STAT testing with same-day results, but it will cost you an extra $60 per test.
Like other state- and university-based labs, they provide several online resources that explain the process of submitting samples to one of their labs. You still need to fill out the federal form VS 10-11 or submit the necessary information digitally, but here is their general submission form. Better yet, here are their packaging and shipping guidelines for submitting samples and a full list of their tests and services.
The UVDL is open Monday through Friday 8am – 5pm except for major holidays. Necropsies are also available at the Logan laboratory after hours for an extra fee. After hours requests should contact cell phone number (435) 770-7951.
