Originally established in 1877, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) now oversees the management of 4 regional animal health laboratories. These modern facilities serve the Commonwealth’s veterinarians, food manufacturers, agricultural animal producers, pet owners and other government program areas with regulatory and diagnostic testing. Working in close contact with farmers, veterinarians and government agencies empowers this organization to maintain surveillance and control of infectious and contagious animal diseases.
Their laboratories provide numerous services across a range of disciplines including bacteriology, serology, virology, parasitology, pathology, and molecular testing. Part of their Mammalian Serology section, VDACS Animal Health Laboratory Services include both AGID and ELISA Coggins testing for $7.30 and $16.85, respectively. They also perform necropsies, bacteriological cultures, identification and sensitivity testing, hematology, parasitology, and histopathological examination of tissues. You can find several online resources available from the VDACS Animal Health Laboratories including a full list of tests and fees, general submission form, and the state’s official equine certificate of veterinary inspection.
As part of its broader mission to promote the economic development of Virginia agriculture, consumer protection, and environmental stewardship, VDACS also oversees a Metrology Laboratory, Plant Pathology Laboratory, and Grain Grading Laboratory.
